Green Claims Directive – a balance between proactive sustainability communication and greenwashing
Illuminate, Level 5
Proposed by the Commission last March, the Green Claims Directive has the objective to ensure claims made by traders are sufficiently backed by evidence and that products consist of and deliver the environmental benefits that they claim to have. At the same time, Greenwashing is a hindrance to consumers making sustainable and informed choices without receiving reliable, comparable, and verifiable information. Additionally, companies that offer verifiably sustainable products can be disadvantaged when the information is not verified. At the same time sustainability and environmental reporting obligations have increased in the last years. Hence how can the balance between proving and communicating your sustainability credentials while avoiding greenwashing be achieved? Anna’s presentation offers to give insights, links with other pieces of legislation but also delve into the unknowns and barriers to effective sustainability communication.

Preparing for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)
Illuminate, Level 5
As part of the European Green Deal, the European Commission put forward a revision of the PPWD in November 2022, with the goal of ensuring that all packaging is reusable or recyclable in an economically feasible way by 2030. The revision aims to reinforce the essential requirements for packaging to ensure its reuse and recycling, boost the uptake of recycled content, and improve the Regulation’s enforceability. Measures are also planned to tackle over-packaging and reduce packaging waste. Hear the panelists’ take on how CPGs, retailers, packaging manufacturers and their supply chain partners should prepare for these changes.

Disrupting the Plastics Value Chain
Illuminate, Level 5
Plastics emit 3.4 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and generate over 300 million tons of waste each year, almost half of it from packaging. We cannot solve this industry-wide challenge by only looking at the materials and system solutions of today. We require disruptive new innovations and technologies that will enable new approaches to solve this problem. In this Flash Talk, Amazon will share their innovation work to develop breakthrough technologies and partner across the value chain to bring a science-based solution to the plastics problem and to create an alternative future for these materials.

Food Waste is (still) a Scandal
Illuminate, Level 5
Tristram Stuart, an award-winning activist, author, National Geographic Explorer, and campaigner, has been shining a light on the “food waste scandal” in our society since 2009. His “Feeding the 5000” food waste campaigns have raised awareness of the problem by serving 5,000 people free curry, smoothies, and groceries made from fruits and vegetables that would have otherwise been thrown away. His company, Toast Ale, was one of the earliest examples of using upcycled ingredients to create new value. Over a decade later, food waste is still a scandal - one that brands and retailers need to play a much more active role in tackling. What progress has been made in recent years, and what headwinds did COVID bring to the fight against food waste? How does food waste contribute to the climate crisis and global conflict? Why do some of the richest countries in the world continue to struggle with waste at both the business and residential level? And what does beer have to do with all this?
Hear Tristram’s perspective on food supply chains, upcycled ingredients, surplus produce, the role of packaging in preventing food waste, and the massive business opportunity for brands and retailers to act as leaders on this issue.

The True Environmental Cost of Food
Illuminate, Level 5
What is the true cost of our foods? Environmental and social externalities of food production are currently not being paid and hence put pressure on the environment and on the stability of markets. This talk presents an approach of internalizing such externalities in the prices of food and communicating in a consumer friendly way the actual costs incurred through industrialized food production and unsustainable consumption patterns. True Cost Accounting is presented as one approach for a sustainable transformation of food systems.

Plastic Elimination Targets: When does it make sense to switch to paper-based packaging?
Illuminate, Level 5
It’s still common to debate “paper or plastic?”, but how can we more effectively navigate the trade-offs of each material depending on the context? With the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations in full swing, packaging companies, retailers and brands need to be ready to look deeper into the data to uncover not what is a great solution, but what is the best solution. In this session, panelists will dive into key principles to help companies determine when to pursue paper over plastic.
